INTRODUCTION

The writer being a dyslexic was able to come through writing a book such as Being Digital. Author Nicolas Negroponte gives 3 reasons why writing a paradoxical Digitizing old-fashioned book. First, there is not enough digital media in the hands of executives, politicians, parents and those who need to understand this radically new culture. Second reason, in connection with his monthly column in Wired Magazine he realized the large audience for information about digital life-styles and people. Not just the plain old theory and equipment. Third is more personal, slightly ascetic reason. Interactive media leaves very little to the imagination. Multimedia narratives include such specific representations that little is left to the mind's eye.

CHAPTER ONE

The chapter talks about atoms and bits then how bits can eventually change the way how we live. It differentiates how forms of atoms can be now transformed into bits and what amazing wonders it does to people in terms of accesibility of information and convenience or complication of living. The chapter also provides a definition of bits and describes how bits came into place. Towards the end it presents possible results and fundamentals that might be observed when media becomes all digital. It mentions multimedia which is the mixing of audio and video. Also the concept of the new bits that emerge from the other bits that have already been existing is only a window or gateway to a farther and more improved information that is already existing or might probably exist after the bit has been explored.

CHAPTER TWO

Bandwidth is the capacity to move information down a given channel.Optical fiber and copper wire are examples of channels that use Bandwidth. Copper telephone wires or "twisted pair" are considered low-bandwidth. Its advantage is the ability to deliver power even during calamities. Fiber on the other hand can transmit bits faster than cooper wires. While ether or air waves is assumed that its capacity is infinite. This stands true when we talk in terms of wireless communications with TV sets and the like. But when cordless telephones come into play infinite capacity is not quite the case. This is where the author proposes what they call the "Negroponte Switch." The idea of what is in the air will go to the ground and what is in the ground will go into the air.

CHAPTER THREE

CHAPTER FOUR

The Federal Communications Commission takes care of providing permit and policing paths of communication in the industry. Now due to the vast expansion of wireless communications FCC takes a firm grip on the spectrum used for the wireless industry. The spectrum is something that belongs to everybody and should be used fairly, competitively, without interference and enriching for all people. Without such concern put on wireless communications possibilities are television signals might collide with the cellular phone.

CHAPTER FIVE

Multimedia is practically what this chapter is all about. Its both about new content and about looking at the old content in different ways. Its about intrinsically interactive media made possible by bits. And its about decreasing costs, increasing power and exploding presence of computers. Multimedia is creating a new direction in contrast with Marshall Macluhan's the medium is the message. In the digital world the medium is NOT the message. It is an embodiment of it. A message might have several embodiments automatically derivable from the same data. In the future, a broadcaster will send out one stream of bits, say weather for example, which can be converted by the receiver in many different ways. The same bits can be looked at by the viewer from many perspectives, say a sporting event example.

CHAPTER SIX

Since the communications industry is very much in demand. It is extremely hard to avoid talking about the bit business. Even if tariffs are determined per minute, per mile, per bit, all of which are rapidly becoming bogus measures the competition seems to be more interesting in terms of the costs that we pay and the added values that we seem to take. For example paying the same price for a two hour movie and having 30 different four minute conversations.
